Baseball Card Values: How To Read A Price
Guide For The Beginner!
Baseball card values can be some of the
hardest things to understand especially If your not a collector of
baseball cards, reading a price guide can seem like a very daunting
task. In reality once you know how they work its really very simple.
Baseball card price guides have been around for a long time now.
Although they are not the most accurate or do they all have the same
price you can get a general idea on values.
They are used to
show the value of a certain card depending on the year and condition.
Baseball card values are probably the most sought after in the price guides.
The main reason is baseball is the most collectible card of all the
sports. Baseball card values are determined and then set into a price
guide. Now how do you read a price guide so your not one who gets
taken by a shady character?
Price guides are divided into years and by the companies who make the
cards. Some of the main ones are
There are a few more but these are the major companies that make
most of the cards on the market. Baseball card values are then placed on the cards by certain
factors.
One of the most import factors that control the cards values is the
condition. The most sought after condition by dealers and collectors
at card shows is
mint condition. Mint condition defines a card with no defects. Which
means perfect in every way. Some flaws in a card would be
- Bent Corners
-
Bad Centering
- Lousy Card Finish
The price guide list prices for mint and near mint cards. Usually each
card will have a high and low price. Many people wonder what high low
means. It means that on an average the high is the highest average the
price has been sold at.
The low means the average lowest price its been sold at. So if your
buying of course you want to buy at the lowest price and sell at the
highest price. Another thing that controls price besides condition is
the demand for a certain card or player.
Another thing that could bring down the price is the amount of
cards that were made.
Starting in the early 1980's the baseball card
companies increased the amount of cards that they printed. It use to
be a lot harder to get a hold of a certain players card. Now with the
overabundance of cards printed and auction sites like EBay putting
buyers and sellers closer together the prices on most cards have
dropped a lot.
