Baseball Salary Cap: Does It Really Work For
Baseball? by Kenny Watkins of

Many years people have complained that
baseball needed a salary cap. Well baseball answered everybody's
request and now people are still complaining. So what is a salary cap?
Does it really work?
So what is a baseball salary cap? It's a figure that Major League
baseball determines that you can't spend on your team in players
salary. It usually changes every year. If you do go over the salary
cap there is a heavy fine imposed.
The salary cap was put in so the smaller market teams could compete
with the larger market teams. Teams from Los Angeles and New York seem
to get all the good players so this was a solution that Major League
baseball has tried.
Has it worked? No not really. The big market teams still get the big
name players. The salary cap doesn't bug the big market teams because
they have the money to pay whatever fine that is imposed on them.
Is there a solution to this? I guess a yes and no answer will have to
suffice here. Yes the only real solution is to enforce a set amount
for a salary cap, but the major teams will never agree to it.
I guess a salary cap is a good item if it's implemented right, maybe
one day Major League baseball will do it the right way. Let's hope
it's soon so everyone has an equal chance of seeing their team in the
World Series.
The way that it is set up now it is still not working just look at the
New York Yankees. They were already over the salary cap and paid a
hefty fine every year and they still went out and got the most
expensive player in baseball Alex Rodriguez. Alex makes 25 million
dollars a year by himself, in some cases this is close to what whole
teams make combined like the
Milwaukee Brewers and the Washington Nationals. What
baseball needs to do is get a salary cap like the NFL or NBA
has. This will never happen because of the baseball players union.
