Cincinnati Bengals: Looking For Respect in
the NFL
by Kenny Watkins of

The Cincinnati Bengals got off to a crazy and
unusual start. After Being fired from the Cleveland Browns it only
took Paul Brown 5 years to land another franchise. This time it was in
Cincinnati. Paul Brown decided on the name of the Bengals for his
team. The Bengals jersey colors are black and orange.
The Bengals history started off not to good. In their first full season in 1968 the
Bengals would struggle. The following year was a lot different. Even
though the record wouldn't reflect it. Two of the top teams in 1969
would fall to the Bengals including the eventual Super Bowl Champion
the Kansas City Chiefs.
Everyone now new this team was a pushover no longer. In 1970 when the
merger in the NFL happened the Bengals got an instant rivalry with the
Cleveland Browns only a couple hours away from them. Plus playing them
twice year would fuel it even more.
In 1973 the Bengals would win the AFC Central with a mark of 10-4. In
the playoffs they would play the defending Super Bowl Champion Miami
Dolphins. They played hard but Miami would win out 34-16
1975 led by Kenny Anderson the Bengals would roll through the season
and end up with a 11-3 record. In the playoffs the met the Raiders in
Oakland and came up a little short on the scoreboard and lost.
After a few years of struggles the Bengals would return to the
playoffs in 1981 in a big way. Winning all their playoff games on
route to their first Super Bowl appearance. The Bengals fought hard in
the Super Bowl But the San Francisco 49ers and Joe Montana and Jerry
Rice was too much for them and they lost 26-21.
In 1998 with Boomer Easison the league's reigning MVP leading the
Charge the Bengals headed back to the Super Bowl. Again they would
face the powerful San Francisco 49ers with Joe Montana. But the same
result would happen as Joe Montana played almost a perfect game and
led the 49ers to another Super Bowl win.
After the Super Bowl losses the Bengals had some bad season and
very few good things happen. But in 2003 Marvin Lewis took over the
Bengals as their head coach and has brought a new breath of fresh air
to the city and the team.
Again the Bengals are fun to watch. With a lot of young players do
well. It seems the Bengals are poised for another Super Bowl run. They recently drafted a fine young quarterback out of USC named
Carson Palmer and have a great running back that is a fan favorite
named Rudi Johnson. The future is looking good for the Bengals again.
The fans are back in the stadium wearing their Bengals hats and
Bengals jerseys and rooting on their team.
