Denver Broncos Kicking it's Way To The Top
by Kenny Watkins of http://www.sports-gift.com
The Denver Broncos were one of the original 8 teams that made up the AFL.
Their name was chosen in a fan contest. Broncos jersey colors are Orange
and Blue. The Broncos have a rich tradition of winning and great
players.
From 1960-1968 their were considered one of the worse AFL franchises.
They slowing keep growing their fan base. Season ticket holders
increased every year even though they weren't winning very many games.
Their one real bright spot was a rookie running back name Floyd
Little. 1968 would mark new uniforms for the Broncos and more seats
added to Mile High Stadium to house the growing fan base.
1973 marks the first winning season the Broncos had. The following
year the Broncos are forced to add more seats as they continue top
grow support for their team. Finally in 1977 the Broncos turned the
corner. Their team was finally winning.
In 1977 their defense was one of the best and got their nickname of
the Orange Crush defense. The nickname came from how they would
smother their opponents. Their defense would carry them to the Super
Bowl. It seemed like everyone was wearing the Orange Broncos jerseys
especially at Mile High Stadium.
In their first Super Bowl appearance they ran into the
Dallas Cowboys.
The Broncos turned the ball over 8 times and lost to the Cowboys
27-10. 1982 would mark a turning point for the franchise when they got
the right to John Elway from the Colts.
In wouldn't take very long and John Elway would show why he was worth
trading for. Elway showed people what he was made of with having to
drive his team 98 yards against the
Cleveland Browns in the playoffs in 1986. No
one thought he could do it but he did. Its today still known as "The
Drive".
But John Elway would struggle in his first two Super Bowl appearance
losing both games. Once to the New York Giants 39-20 and the
Washington Redskins 42-10.
John Elway was tagged with the saying he couldn't win the Big One. All
this do was fuel John for greater things.
Elway merchandise were hot sellers from Jerseys to pens after his
Super Bowl appearances. But John still wanted to win one. In the next
Super Bowl the same fate would fell John as the
San Francisco 49ers
demolished his Broncos 55-10. Of course everyone blamed Elway.
Elway's career was winding down and with the addition of running back
Terrell Davis. The Broncos once again were a team to fear. With John
Playing at MVP level the Broncos would appear in two more Super Bowls.
John Elway would lead them to wins in both of them one against the
Green Bay Packers and the
Atlanta Falcons.
Shortly after the second Super Bowl John Elway would retire. Today's
Broncos are led by Jake "the snake" Plummer and some new and up and coming stars.
They are poised to make another Super Bowl run. With the weather at
Mile High Elway and Plummer jerseys they are still hot sellers among the
fans.
