Green Bay Packers a name the people know with
winning. But this franchise had a hard way to go to keep afloat. The
Packers name comes from their sponsor at the time the Indian Packing
Company. Team colors are green and yellow.
August 11 Curley Lambeau called together a
meeting of a bunch different people and the Packers were formed. The
Packing company provide the field and jerseys and that's the reason
for the name Packers. In 1921 the Packing company help Curley Lambeau
get the Packers in the NFL.
1922 the Packers almost lost their NFL status
as the Packing company decided not to sponsor the Packers anymore.
Locals came up with backers and they also formed the Green Bay
Football corporation to keep the Packers in Green Bay.
With financial backing the Packers start to
excel on the football field. In 1923 they finish 7-2. In 1929 the
Packers win their first NFL Championship with a record of 12-0-1. The
next two years the Packers win the next two years to for three
straight championships.
1936 and 1939 brings the Packers their fourth
and fifth championships. In total the Packers would win 5 out of 8
championship games. The Packers start to struggle and lose money.
In 1956 Bart Starr debuts as the Packers
quarterback. Vince Lombardi is hired in 1958 and in 1959 Vince leads
them to their first winning season in 12 years. In 1965 Packers honor
Curley Lambeau who dies in the off season by renaming the field to
Lambeau field.
After beating the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL
Championship the Packers headed to the First Super Bowl to crown a
world champion. It pitted the Kansas City Chiefs against the Packers.
The Packers won 35-10. The following year the Packers played the
Cowboys in a playoff game.
Which was known as the Ice Bowl as the wind
chill reached -47 degrees. The Packers won the game 21-17 and a trip
to the Super Bowl. This time it was the Oakland Raiders who were the
Packers victim by the score of 33-14. In 1968 Vince Lombardi steps
down as coach. After some down seasons in 1989 the Packers finished
10-6 but still missed the playoffs.
1992 the Packers brought in Mike Holmgren to
bring in the West Coast Offense. It didn't take long with Brett Farve
improving each year the Packers made it to the Super Bowl in 1997.
That's year they faced the New England Patriots and dominated them
35-21.
1998 brought the Packers another Super Bowl
visit but the results weren't as good as the previous ones. The Denver
Broncos went on to beat the Packers and win their first Super Bowl.
But the future continues to look bright as Brett Farve is still at the
helm.
The Packers are the only team that actually
sold shares of stock in the Packers. Over four million have been sold
and not one holder receives any money back from it. Its the thrill of
being part of the Packers and keeping the team in Green Bay.
