Infield Fly Rule can win you money from your
friends by Vince Falcone
There is a lot of questions about sports that
people need answered right away. Sometimes you are having a
conversation with a coworker about the complications of the infield
fly rule or maybe the format of the nfl playoffs. You both agree to
disagree then you go home and look up the question online so you can
print it out and show it to them to prove your point.
Did you ever wonder how the starting line up at NASCAR is chosen or
even how the NASCAR owners points are figured out. Of course that has
come up in conversation to many times to mention. The reason for this
sports article is that I was in a Champs sports bar during the NY
Yankees- Boston Red Sox playoff game and some drunk was yelling that
the infield fly rule should have been called on a play. The funny
thing is he was so sure he was right it was too funny.
Here is the situation at hand and please don't laugh because you had
to be there. There was a runner on second base and third base the
batter bunted the ball in the air. The pitcher caught the ball on the
fly and that was the third out. That is it, the third out was made.
This guy had no clue what was going on. It brought the conversation up
about the rules of the infield fly rule and my two buddies started to
discuss it as if they knew what they were talking about.
These guys went at it for three days and two more playoff games before
I shut them up by explaining the rule with the proper paperwork from
the internet. Now I have a bigger problem because every time they have
a question about sports they drag me into the conversation.
I have on numerous occasions explained things like what it takes to
get a player ejected from a football game or the best the nfl overtime
rule. No one ever seems to know or even care what the rule is until it
comes into play.
Want to have some fun with your buddies? Go find out the rules for the
sports that you watch the most and print it out. Take this to the
sports bar with you and when the same questions come up you whip out
the sports rule book and show it to them. After you go to the bathroom
to check out the rules to make sure you are right you go back to the
bar and bet a beer.
