Jacksonville Jaguars: The Future Is Now
by Kenny Watkins
Jacksonville Jaguars are looking towards the future, but their past
has been pretty good too. The Jaguar name was selected from a contest where
fans sent in their choices. The team's Jersey colors are teal, black
and gold.
In 1989 Jacksonville work to get a team in
this Florida town. But the NFL wasn't fond of the idea as they didn't
want 3 teams in the same state. But Jacksonville won out and they
started their first season in 1995. They would lose their first game
by a score of 10-3 to the Houston Oilers.
The Jaguar fans were sold out capacity as
they rooted on the team. Sales of Jaguar jerseys and Jaguar
merchandise were a hot item
before the team even took the field for their first football game.
The bright spot for the Jaguars in their first season was their
stunning upset of the Steelers 20-16. It was also their first home
win. The Jaguars would finish their first season with a record of
4-12. In their second season they would stun defending
AFC Champions
Pittsburgh Steelers by the score of 24-9.
Behind new and rising stars like Mark Brunnell, Jimmy Smith , and
Keenan McCardell the Jaguars would steadily improve. They would win
their last five games and make the playoffs in their second year as a
wild card team.
Not a lot was expected of them in the playoffs. The Jaguars had
different ideas as they beat the Buffalo Bills in their first ever
playoff game. Next up was the Denver Broncos and they came back from
behind and stun the Broncos.
Next up was the New England Patriots in frigid New England. But their
luck ran out for the Jaguars and they lost to the Patriots. In the
1997 the Jaguars continue to impress as they earn another playoff
spot. This time luck wouldn't shine on them and they would lose
soundly to the Broncos 42-17.
1998 would mark their first division title with an 11-5 mark. But the
season would end in New York as the New
York Jets were just too much for the
Jaguars. 1999 mark their best season yet as they compiled a 14-2
record. Winning another divisional title and a run at the Super Bowl.
Unfortunately the Jaguars would lose in the AFC championship game to
the Tennessee Titans.
The next four years would bring changes to the Jaguars. Gone was coach
Tom Coughlin and the winning. It was replacing with 4 losing seasons.
Now the Jaguars have a new attitude and youth aboard and are slowly
ascending to the top. With top pick Brian Leftwich the Jaguars are
looking for more playoff games for them and their fans.
