Janet Jackson and Super bowl it is now part
of Super Bowl history by Kenny Watkins
It has now been a while and people are still
talking about Janet Jackson and Super Bowl fiasco as if
it was yesterday. Janet Jackson and Super Bowl have become forever
etched in time. Not one sports person would think that would ever be
the case.
It all started with a halftime show that seemed so innocent. Janet
Jackson and Justin Timberlake were singing a song during the halftime
show at the Super Bowl. At the end of the song Justin ripped a portion
of her top off. Janet Jackson's picture has been downloaded many times
on the internet as you can imagine.
Of course it wasn't suppose to show her breast only her bra. It didn't
happen this way. Her breast was exposed and now a part of Super Bowls
history. You can remember Joe Montana and his games where he performed
great. It will be Janet Jackson and Super bowl XXXVIII that will be
one that is talked about for years to come.
The fall out was astronomical. The exposure happens during dinnertime
and when many young viewers had access to televisions. The negative
response was overwhelming for CBS. They said they watched all the
rehearsals and nothing like this was planned.
Some other people had a different take on it. MTV was hired to produce
the half time show. After the show the NFL was quick to act and now most NFL
halftime shows are on a 5 second delay to prevent this from happening.
MTV is also a company that is owned by Viacom which also owns CBS so
some people think this was a planned event.
The FCC also fined CBS heavily for this performance. Now halftime
shows are monitored more closely and so are regular shows after this
debacle. Howard Stern type shows are really being fined big time
because of this broadcast. Even Howard felt the heat and moved his
show to Sirius Satellite Radio.
But the question everyone really wants to
know.
Was it planned? Or just an accident. I guess only Janet and Justin
really know. The public probably will never find out for sure unless
they admit it.. For now its just
a burning question which will go down in Super Bowl history.
The funny and sad thing about it is that this 5 second event
changed what people watch on tv forever. There are much more
censorship among the networks because of it.
Now the halftime acts are much more mainstream or I should say less
risky. Acts like Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones get top billing
which in a way is funny because when the Super Bowl started back in
the early 1960's they were considered controversial.
