New Orleans Saints: Still Searching For A
Path
New Orleans was admitted to the NFL in
November 1, 1966. That day is also a Roman Catholic celebration day
called All Saints Day. So the ownership thought it would be proper
to name the new team the Saints.
Their first game was in 1967 in front of over 80,000 fans at Tulane
Stadium. They lost the game to the Los Angeles Rams 27-13 The first
first three seasons the Saints ended up with
a record of 12-29-1. Shortly after that their coach Tom Fears is
fired.
In 1969 things started to look up for the Saints. Danny Abramowicz
wins the NFL receiving honors with 73 catches. Then in 1970 Tom
Dempsey who was born without any toes on his right foot. He wore a
squared toe kicking shoe and hit a 63 yard field goal to help the
Saints win a game and at the time set an NFL record.
1971 brought a new day for the New Orleans Saints. They drafted Archie
Manning out of Ole Miss to help build a foundation for the future.
Archie played hard during career and was never able to bring the
championship to New Orleans. During Archie time as the player the best
the Saints were ever to do was 8-8.
In 1980 the New Orleans Saints finish with a record of 1-15 and the
famous aints were born. The aints were a group of fans who wore paper
sacks on their heads for the woeful play the Saints would put out on
the field.
During the years the Saints have hired some big name coaches, Hank
Stram, Bum Phillips and Jim Mora. But none was able to capture the
magic. The Saints have made 5 playoff appearances and two division
championships. But no Super Bowl appearances.
Currently Jim Haslett is trying to lead the Saints to the promise
land. But only time will tell if he can get the job done. Quarterback
Aaron Brooks has been leading the team for the past few years. Even
though he is a good Quarterback they just haven't seem to put it
altogether.
The receiving corp of Dante Stallworth and
All Pro Joe Horn are always a scoring treat. Joe has shown he is a
stand up guy with the fans. This has been a tough year for the Saints
fans and the region of New Orleans.
