New York Jets: Flying High Again
First known as the New York Titans from
1960-1962. Then from 1963 on the name was changed to the New York
Jets. Name was chosen as Jets use to fly over Shea Stadium in 1963 and
it also rhyme with the Mets who played their too.
The Titans struggled in their seasons and
were sold to Sonny Werblin for one million dollars. That is when the
name was changed to Jets. In 1964 the Jets would land their new home
Shea Stadium. 1965 would mark a big advancement for the Jets when they
signed Quarterback Joe Namath for 425,000 a big amount in 1965.
The 1969 Super Bowl Would Change HistoryJoe Namath would change the quarterback position forever. Jets showed
improvement every year and in 1968 Joe led them to a 11-3 and a trip
to the AFL Championship. The Jets went on to beat The
Oakland Raiders and a
trip to the Super Bowl.
The Jets were heavy under dogs to the Baltimore Colts. But someone
forgot to tell Joe Namath this. In the press Namath tells everyone
that he guarantee's a win. This was unheard of back then. Joe would go
out and keep his promise as the Jets beat the then Baltimore
Colts 16-7 and Namath
was named Super Bowl MVP.
Joe would try his best to bring the Jets another Super Bowl but
couldn't match his earlier success. Joe would retire a few years
later. The Jets would struggle for a long time. In 1982 the Jets would
make another playoff run. Their run would end in muddy Miami as the
Jets turned the ball over and lost 14-0
1984 would mark a new place to play for the Jets. They would play in
the Meadowlands which also housed the NY Giants. 1985 and 1986 were
good years for the Jets making the playoffs both years but were
eventually lose.
For the next few years the Jets would struggle a lot. Coaches would
come and go as would players too. The Jets would hire Herman Edwards a
former player to turn them around. In a short period of time Edwards
have changed the Jets fortunes and the fans of New York were excited
again. This would soon change overnight though when he basically quit
on the team and joined the coaching ranks with the
Kansas City Chiefs.
They are buying green and white Chad
Pennington jerseys and showing their pride in the stadium with all
sorts of NY Jets merchandise. On Sundays when the Jets are home the
Meadowlands is a sea of green with Jets hats, jackets and
blankets as it gets cold in that stadium when the sun goes down.
They are trying to build a new Jets stadium
on the west side of Manhattan but if they will is a big question.
Update: Looks like that will never happen as the city has voted it
down.
They keep playing they way they are maybe
another Super Bowl isn't too far off for Jets fans.
