Philadelphia Eagles - Flying High Through
The Years With A Winning Tradition
When Bert Bell bought this franchise in 1933
he
named his team the Eagles. The Team colors are midnight green, black,
silver and white. In their first season the Eagles would struggle to a
3-5-1 record. But Bert Bell wasn't discouraged, his Eagles would
struggle the next couple years.
To help the league out and his Eagles Bert Bell came up with the
idea of a draft system. Of course he would get the first pick. But
after they pick Jay Berwanger he decides not to play football and the
Eagles continue their downward spiral.
In 1939 the Eagles sign Davey O'Brien for 12,000 dollars plus a
portion of the gate. But it didn't help either as the Eagles have
another losing season. In 1940 Art Rooney buys half interests in the
Eagles. Both Bert Bell and Art Rooney trades the Eagles franchise for
the Pittsburgh Steelers franchise.
In 1948 the Eagles would win their first NFL Championship, and repeat
that feat 1949. The Eagles would have a few good years and a few bad
but in 1960 they would win another NFL Championship thanks in part to
a great defense.
Leonard Tose a millionaire trucking executive buys the Eagles for a
record 16.1 million dollars. After 10 non-winning seasons the Eagles
hire Dick Vermeil. Vermeil would ruffle some feathers as he would work
the Eagles hard.
Many players resented it but a lot didn't. Slowly but surely the
Eagles improved. And in a few years behind Ron Jaworski they would
land in the Super Bowl losing eventually to the Oakland Raiders 27-10.
Dick Vermeil retired in a few years citing burnout. The Eagles would
continue to find their way.
Tragedy would strike the Eagles by losing Jerome Brown in an car
crash. The Eagles would beset by many problems through the next few
years. They draft Donovan McNabb in hopes of bringing a championship
to Philadelphia.
The Eagles would make it to three NFC Championship games only to lose
everyone. In the off season the Eagles signed outspoken Terrell Owens
to help them take the next step. Will they make it? I will keep you
posted.
