San Francisco 49ers, looking towards the
future by Kenny Watkins of

San Francisco has had a very successful run. Their collectibles are
very hot and there jerseys are always big sellers. But it didn't start
out this way. The franchise first entered the league in 1946. The
49ers name came out of respect for the spirit of the men of the gold
rush in California.
Red, gold, and
black marks the team colors. $25,000 is what trucking executive Tony
Morabito paid for this franchise. In their first season they did
fairly well with a 9-5 record. They were the first team to sign an
Asian American player named Wally Yonamine. San Francisco had hoped
his speed would make it hard on defenses.
First few years the 49ers were pretty good. But no titles resulted as
they would always have to deal with the Cleveland Browns who would
always beat them. From 1949- 1956 the 49ers struggled and weren't very
good. They had very few bright spots. One was Joe Perry first running
back ever to have back to back 1,000 yard seasons.
1957 seen a turnaround for the 49ers. With a 8-4 record the 49ers
advanced to the playoffs and played the Lions. The 49ers seemed to
have game in hand 27-7 but the Lions scored 24 unanswered points and
won 31-27.
Next couple years the 49ers would get better under young quarterback
John Brodie. John Brodie did all he could but not until 1971 would he
lead to the NFC Championship game only to lose to the Dallas Cowboys.
Then 1972 in a playoff game the Dallas Cowboys would break the 49ers
hearts again with another comeback and break the 49ers fans hearts
again. In 1973 John Brodie retired after a tough season.
Next few
seasons were rough and in 1977 they were sold to Ohio businessman
Eddie Debartolo Jr. Shortly Bill Walsh is hired and this would change
the 49ers more than anyone realizes.
Bill Walsh struggles the first few years. They draft a kid called Joe
Montana out of Notre Dame who would help Bill Walsh and the 49ers
bring a championship to San Francisco. In 1981 Joe Montana leads the
49ers to the playoffs. They would face their bitter rival the Dallas
Cowboys.
The Dallas Cowboys took a lead into the final minutes but Joe Montana
threw a ball that tight end Dwight Clark caught which today is know
simply as "The Catch". This catch would send the 49ers to their first
Super Bowl.
Joe Montana would go on to lead the 49ers to three Super Bowl wins and
3 MVP awards in the process. His jerseys still are hot sellers today.
Joe finished his career up in Kansas City. After Joe left Steve Young
took over and would lead the 49ers to one more Super bowl.
After that the 49ers would have some hard times. But are trying to
rebuild. They lost Terrell Owens to the Eagles. So its been quiet in
San Francisco but I am sure they will be back real soon.
