Seattle Seahawks - Ready To fly into the
playoffs by Kenny Watkins
Wanting to see football in the Seattle area
is all Lloyd W. Nordstrom wanted. He was very instrumental in getting
the Seattle Seahawks franchise there. But on a sad note he died of a heart attack
before he could see his dream come true.
Seattle had a contest to name their new
football franchise. They had over 20,000 entries to name the team. The
winning entry was the Seahawks. The colors chosen were Dark Navy Blue,
Pacific Blue, and Neon Green. In their first full season in 1976 the
Seahawks were 2-12.
One of the moves that the franchise made which still haunts them today
was trading their draft pick to the Dallas Cowboys for 2 second round
picks. The draft pick the Cowboys took was Tony Dorsett, who went on
to a hall of fame career.
In their second season the Seahawks finished 5-9 being lead by
quarterback Jim Zorn. Zorn was a special quarterback and a very
popular player for Seattle. As their weren't a lot of left handed
quarterbacks back than.

In 1978 Steve Largent led the Seahawks with over 1,000 yards receiving
but they still struggled. Steve would become a congressman after he
retired. Seattle struggled for most of the late 70's hovering around
the .500 mark most of the time. But this would change in the 80's.
Seattle slowly became better and in 1983 made the playoffs with a 9-7
record. Eventually the Seahawks would lose to the Los Angeles Raiders in the AFC
Championship game. The next year Seattle
would post a 12-4 record and another playoff appearance. But the same
result a lost to the Miami Dolphins.
The next two years 1985 and 1986 they would miss the playoffs but still
were very competitive. In 1987 Steve Largent would set the all time
reception mark. Just a year later the Touchdown mark would fall and
then the receiving yards would be Steve's too.
Steve would hold these records a few years before Jerry Rice came
along and broke them. In 1989 they would retire Steve Largent's
number. He is still considered one of the greatest wide receivers of
all-time.
Seattle would struggle again until 1999 when they would win their
Second divisional title. Only two lose to Dan Marino and his Dolphins.
Seattle's fortunes now are in Mike Holgrem's
hands. Mike was brought in from the Green Bay Packers where he won a
Super Bowl to turn around the Seahawks.
And with a loyal fan base the Seahawks can only fly even higher. Super
Bowl? You never know.
