Skateboarding History Where Did It All Begin?
How did skateboarding start? Many people don't realize that skateboarding history actually has a direct link to surfing. The first skateboards were based on surfboards and the surfing community. The first ever skateboard actually had four roller skate wheels attached to it. It sure has come a long way from them. Let's look at some of the history of skateboarding.
Skateboarding had two early pioneers that can be credited with getting skateboards of the ground. The two men who really had a big hand in it were Larry Stevenson and Hobie Alter. Both created the early skateboards and they were an instant success selling over 50 million is just three years.
In the late sixties so called experts step in and determined skateboarding unsafe and it hurt sales tremendously and as quickly as skateboarding rose it fell just as quickly. Skateboarding had its ups and downs in the next 40 years In the 80's skateboarding came out with different kinds of designs and the materials being use has changed greatly with plywood ramp being a big part of the equation. The 80's also ushered in the name Tony Hawk who help make skateboarding an household name.
Now you see skateboarding on the news when Danny Way does something that others
think is impossible.
Skateboarding history wouldn't be complete unless you mention ESPN's the x-games and the impact they have had on it. Today's skateboarders enter competitions with prize money being put up. Today's skateboarders can earn anywhere from 1,000 to 10,000 dollars for winning tournaments. Skateboarding has sure come a long way from it's humble beginnings.
