Washington Redskins - The History
The Pride and The Tradition
George Preston Marshall founded the Redskins.
But originally they were called the Boston Braves. But another team
already had that name. So later on George changed the name to the
Redskins. He moved the Redskins to Washington DC in 1937.
The Redskins logo is the head of a Native
American wearing feathers in side of a mustard circle with 2 feathers
hanging off of it which has offended various groups of people. To this
day though its still being used. If you are looking to get your hands

The Redskins would open a lot of eyes in their first season in 1937 by
winning their division, and the NFL Championship to by beating the
Bears. The next year the Redskins were back
in the NFL Championship but lost to the Giants. In 1939 the Redskins
played for another NFL Championship but lost again to the
Bears.
The Redskins weren't done as in 1942 the Redskins won another NFL
Championship by beating the Bears again. But in 1943 the Bears paid
them back by beating the Redskins in the
NFL Championship game. 1944 was a down year for the Redskins. But they
worked hard and was back in the 1945 Championship game only to lose a
heart breaker to the Rams
when two field goals hit the uprights.
From 1946-1962 the Redskins struggle mightily. Everything seems to
fall apart for the Redskins. In 1962 the Redskins finally integrated
their team with draft pick Bobby Mitchell behind pressure from the NFL
and the District of Columbia.
Following the 1968 season Otto Graham was fired and replaced with
Vince Lombardi who leaves Green Bay after promised part ownership in
the Redskins. Then in 1970
bad news shocked the Redskins when Vince Lombardi dies from colon
cancer.
In 1971 George Allen is named head coach of the Redskins. It takes him
little time to turn around the Redskins. He has them in Super Bowl 7
against Miami in 1972. Unfortunately their on the losing end.
1973 Billy Kilmer and The Over The Hill Gang continue working their
magic and made the playoffs again but lost to the
Vikings. 1974
brought in a new era for the Redskins. The signing of Joe Theismann
from the CFL and the Redskins
were bought by Jack Kent Cooke.
Struggles continue for The Redskins and George Allen is fired. In 1980
Joe Gibbs is hired and ushers in a new era for the Redskins Joe Gibbs
first year was not a good one and fans wanted Joe Gibbs to be fired
but luckily for Redskins fans he wasn't.
In 1982 the Redskins make the Super Bowl only two see a familiar foe
the Miami Dolphins again. The Redskins behind Big John Riggins win
their first Super Bowl 27-17. John Riggins was named MVP.
Following the Super Bowl win the Redskins are right back in the Super
Bowl this time facing the Raiders. But the result wasn't what they
expected and the Raiders dominate the Redskins and win 38-7.
The next three years the Redskins play well but can't reach the Super
Bowl again until 1987. The Redskins are back for their 3 super Bowl in
6 years. This time they face the Denver Broncos and are lead by
quarterback Doug Williams to victory by a score of 42-10. Doug
Williams is named MVP.
1991 was the best year for the Redskins as they finish with a 14-2
record on their way to another Super Bowl. Their victim this time was
the Buffalo Bills. The final score was closer that the game was 37-24.
Then as sudden as they rose the Redskins have fell. To this date they
have struggled. No matter who they have brought in it seems no goes
right. But now they have went back in time and brought back Joe Gibbs
to get them back to the promise land.
With the addition of Clinton Portis and Joe Gibbs ability to teach.
Daniel Snyder the new owner spending the money to bring good players
in. The Redskins should be back in no time. The Redskins jerseys
especially throwback jerseys are popular because of their successes.
It is hard to find tickets to see the Redskins play especially when
the Cowboys or the Giants are playing
them. It is really tough when the nearby
Baltimore Ravens are playing. For
