Yankee Stadium - The House That Ruth Built is a Tourist Attraction For All Sports Fans by Vince Falcone If you ask most people what stadium you are talking about when you mention the word stadium they will say Yankee Stadium. That is no secret to anyone that watches sports or knows sports history. The New York Yankees are sports most famous name. The NY Yankees play in Yankees stadium which opened for its inaugural game on April 18, 1923 against who else but the Boston Red Sox. Most people do not know some of the facts behind Yankee Stadium which is also called the house that Ruth built. Back in the 1920's The NY Yankees purchased the contract of Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox for at the time was a huge amount of money. The owner of the Red Sox needed money for a play that his wife was producing or something. Who knows maybe the guys wife made the deal for Babe Ruth. The Yankee Stadium land was bought from the same family that owns the famous Waldoff Astoria hotel for $675,000. The original plans fro the stadium called for it to be enclosed all the way around. but it believed that budget cuts changed those plans. One of the most amazing facts about Yankee stadium is that it was built in only 285 working days. The cost of Yankee stadium was only 2.5 million which at the time was a lot of money but now that wouldn't even cover the cost of plans for a new Yankee Stadium.
Yankee Stadium has changed over the years mostly due to the changing times. Lights were added in the 1940's a new electric scoreboard in the 1950's. The Stadium had a major facelift in the early 1970's that forced the NY Yankees to make Shea Stadium their home for a few years.
There have been other major events held at Yankee Stadium. In the early days boxing was a regular event as all the greats fought here from Joe Louis, Max Smelling, and even the great Muhammad Ali all fought there. The New York football Giants used Yankee Stadium as their home from 1956 until 1973 when they moved to New Jersey's Meadowlands. The Stadium has also been home to some of the best college football classic games. There have been 2 Popes that have said mass in the Stadium and of course my favorite event the 1990's Billy Joel Storm Front concerts the first concerts ever held at Yankee Stadium. There are some sports fans that may say the Yankees suck but there is no doubt that the ground Yankee Stadium is on is sacred ground. Most tourist make a trip to Yankee Stadium even on days when the Yankees are not playing. If you are ever in New York you have to visit Yankee Stadium.
